Welcome to the home of the Hiroshima Carp of the JBL
HOLY CARP! Hiroshima Wins First JBL Championship!
The Hiroshima Carp won the JBL's first Championship Trphy by beating the Chiba Lotte Marines 4 games to 1. SP Hiroshi was the Series's MVP going 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA.
SP Rikyu Blasts Hiroshima Management; gets sent to Siberia
Starting pitcher Rikyu blasted Hiroshima owner Marmel following the JBL Series. In a daring game 5 move, Marmel sat #2 SP Kaneie to give him an extra day's rest in case of a game 6. Hiroshi was waiting in the wings for a possible game 7. So the question was, "Who should start game 5?" Rikyu thought the decision was a no-brainer since he was an All-Star in 2002, but Marmel went with Mitsusuka, who had a much lower ERA. Mitzi won the game, and the series and everybody was happy, or so we thought.
Following the series, Rikyu publically questioned Marmel's decision making, and said that Hiroshima won the Title, despite Marmel's decisions. Marmel had no comment, but Rikyu was almost immediatly traded to the JBL's version of Siberia, Yomiuri.
In exchange, Hiroshima received SS Dustin Tufts. Tufts will join SS Kanbe in the Hiroshima infield, both probably spliting time on the field.
LF Giovanni Stangl drafted by Hiroshima
Having the final pick in the first round of the amatuer draft, Hiroshima selected LF Giovanni Stangl. Stangl is years away from helping the Carp win games, but he is said to be a brilliant home run hitter, and in the tiny home park of the Carp, that is a great asset. Marmel said, "We are quite happy that Giovanni was available with the #12 pick. He shows tremendous power in his swing and if we can harness, and control that power in the minors, he should one day be out starting left fielder. We will support Mr. Stangl through and though in the minors and give him every oppotunity to succeed with this organization."
2003 Goal for the Carp: Repeat
Following a hugely successful 2002 campaign, the only thing on the mind of the Carp players and management is doing it again. Marmel had this to say, "It is going to be tough. The other teams in the CL know we are the team to beat and they are making the moves to top us. Hanshin should be really tough, they almost had us last year. We are hesitant to make any big moves, because why mess up a good thing, but we know we have weaknesses, and we traded for a better shortstop, and we have a few free agents in mind right now. We will see where the cards fall, but at the least, we WILL be competing for the CL title in 2003."
